advice on toilet behaviour

We have adopted a 9yr old boy - he had an awful life previously and was kept 'as a baby' up until the age of four (still in nappies/using a buggy. He has been with us now for over 5 years - but still messes himself and sometimes does disgusting things with the mess! Could you offer any advice on how we should treat this?? Thanks

How wonderful he has found you, poor little guy ,he has been through some bad things in his life but now he has you, treat him like a 9year old, no pull-ups, no diapers, tell him he is a big boy now, get him those great big boy underwear with the heroes on them ,talk to him a lot and tell him that it is okay to have an accident but it would help you if he used the Toilet as it is less work. Then let him be in control of his body, back off, dont react if there is an accident thats okay Less talk as that can cause anxiety , Good luck you deserve it.
