Early Fetal Ultrasound

Early Fetal Ultrasound

When it’s done: Between weeks 6 and 10. However, not all women choose to have an early ultrasound. Your provider can help you decide.

An early ultrasound confirms your pregnancy, determines the number of babies you’re carrying and offers you the first glimpse of your precious little one. It also allows your provider to see your baby’s heartbeat and confirm that the pregnancy is in the uterus (and not outside the uterus, or ectopic).

Early ultrasounds are often done vaginally to allow a clearer image of the fetus; a small instrument is inserted into the vagina and transmits sound waves that display an image onto a screen.
