Red bellied black snake?  I don't know Australian species.  I would not have been hysterical upon seeing that snake, even if it is likely a poisonous one.  It is just sunning itself in the man made pond.  It isn't in a strike position.  It's in a relaxed position.  I would be afraid enough to keep my distance and use a telephoto lens to take the picture, but I don't see any reason to be hysterical of a snake that is just sunning itself.  I'm not a fanatic, and I certainly do fear snakes, but I also respect them.  I think that the snake is beautiful.

Margy likely just saw a garter snake.  They don't get very big.  They're not venomous or poisonous and they're not aggressive.  They rarely bite.  They will, but only if they feel threatened.  My brother was bitten as a kid, because he harassed the poor thing and handled it too long.  They prefer to get away from danger before they strike.  They just scare people who are afraid of snakes.  Cats hunt garter snakes.
