8 ADHD Culprits Lurking in Your Home

Tap Water

Tap Water
Culprit: Lead pipes, lead solder on indoor plumbing, brass faucets
Found in: Drinking water
What it does: Children's developing brain and nervous systems are especially vulnerable to lead's effect. Recent studies have shown that even low-level lead exposure can cause ADD symptoms like hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattentive behavior.
Fix it: Homes built before 1986 are more likely to use lead pipes, fixtures and solder, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). But "lead-free" plumbing used in newer homes may legally contain up to 8% lead. Brass or chrome-plated brass faucets and fixtures can also leach lead. If you think your pipes contain lead, call your local health department or water supplier about testing.
