Culprit: Organophosphate pesticides
Found in: Bug spray, weed killer, termite exterminators
What they do: Similar to the pesticide used on commercially-grown produce, many home lawn and garden products contain pesticides like organophosphates. Organophosphates work by attacking the nervous system of insects. Researchers think that in humans, pesticides may act on brain chemicals related to
ADD/ADHD.
Fix it: The EPA has banned the use of most residential pesticides, but there still some common lawn sprays, weed killers and bug sprays that contain organophosphates. Avoid using these products, especially if your children play outside. Look for natural alternatives and make sure to wash all produce from your garden before eating.
