Beta-carotene is a naturally occurring chemical found in fruits and veggies. It’s a source of vitamin A and is a known antioxidant, protecting cells from chemical damage. While research has found a connection between a diet high in fruits and vegetables and a decreased risk for cancer, the same cannot be said for beta-carotene supplements. There is no research to support a decreased risk of lung cancer in nonsmokers who take the supplements, and research has actually shown that smokers who take a high concentration of beta-carotene supplements may be increasing their risk of lung cancer.
