Medication can definately help some afflicted with ADHD. However,a combined approach of behavior therapy/accomodations (particularly in the school setting) are essential to success. 5 years old is a young age to diagnose ADHD, and although it may indead be a correct diagnosis, I would suggest first trying modifications to see if that alone can help. Your school can work with you to establish an IEP with these modifications. For our family, our decision to add medication was not easy. However, when we clearly saw our son struggling to just try to keep up with his peers, we decided to trial medication. It was clearly a benefit for him. We still struggle with many issues. Either way, make sure you are being cared for by a physician who is experienced with treating ADHD. As for medication, this decision may not need to be made right now. In the meantime, read up on as much as you can about medications and alternative therapies. Good Luck!
