Dr wasnt very helpful

Hi, im 22 and have been diagnosed with adrenal insufficiency recently. I see my Dr at an outreach clinic away from where her office is. I understand that she is probably not very happy there because she is crowded but she literally did lab tests and called me to tell me she was putting me on prednisone 5mg. She didnt explain anything to me, about what i should look out for or anything. So are there anything i need to be aware of? How bad is it if i miss a dose? Or should i just not worry about it until i see her again?

I will send you some links to help you out. If you can, please ask to be taken off prednisone and be put on hydrocortisone and get extra in your script for stress dosing. Explain that you did research and the long term side effects are less as well as HC is more like what the body makes. You will also need an emergency injection (act-o-vial of solu-cortef) and IM syringe.

AI is a disorder where your body is not making enough cortisol. As long as you take the replacements, you should be fine. If you get sick, you have to learn to stress dose. Since your doctor is not giving you guidelines, you can find them online, but you need to take more when you have a fever, vomit, have surgery etc. so  your body can heal. If there is a big event, then the syringe is needed such as when you can't keep pills down. Make sure you are well hydrated. AI is basically that the body cannot hold sodium and thus sodium drops and potassium in most cases spikes. This can be life threatening so be sure you act. Look up the symptoms and be aware. Wear a medic alert bracelet. You may need more salt in your diet as well as another medication to hold sodium.

It is a new way of life and it is going to take a bit to get used to.

You are welcome - just take the time to learn your *new* body and you should be fine. Regular doctors are not so good at this disease (most of them are not experienced at it) but an endocrinoligist should be better.

We can learn any professions we chose, but our attitudes takes more efforts to achieve a generally accepted kind character. I think doctors should explained their medical findings to their patient in layman terms, to calm their patient, to satisfies curiosities and justify its charges. But most importantly to gain patient confidence. Some doctors assumed too much, maybe that’s what happen  to your case not unless you asked for details he/she declined to give one. If I may, you could visit your doctor again and ask for it. Good luck.
