Could it be alzheimer's after all?

In late 2014 my grandmother (84 then) started thinking people who had been dead had visited her that day. It went on with more confusion for a while, got worse, but only seemed to happen early morning/late at night (which was after her dose of Xanax which she's took for a long time). She would think her kid who were now grown were kids again/confused where she was and all that. Thinking it was some sudden onset of dementia we went to a doctor and she passed all the test that someone with that would fail..Also had head scans, urine tests, ect. Well, on recommendation we lowered her Xanax dose and it stopped. She'd been fine until tonight, well over a year later and after a nap she was suddenly confused again. Any idea what could be going on? Hoping the whole mess doesn't start again.
