Lou Gehrig's Disease

My dad was recently diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's Disease and I was curious about many things. I don't want to ask my mom because I know the question's I have would make her very upset. I don't want an answer trying to protect me I want the truth. I'm curious about the life expectancy for someone with the disease and if their is any possibility that the symptoms could stop? How fast will it take for him to become totally paralyzed? Is their any possibility that this is not going to kill him? As of right now, the only symtoms he has is trouble talking.
Thank you for the help,
M.

Death often occurs within 3 - 5 years of diagnosis. About 25% of patients survive for more than 5 years after diagnosis. I found an excellent article on scribd called - Slowing the Progression of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Motor Neurone Disease). This condition is also called Lou Gehrig Disease. I'll send you the link.
