Opinions on treatment

I'm looking for opinions on my vets prescribed treatment

On Wednesday night, my cat starting going to the litter box a lot, sometimes as little as five minutes between visits, trying to urinate. Sometimes a little would come out, sometimes not. This was still going on Thursday morning, so I took him to the vet in the afternoon.

The vet diagnosed a urinary tract infection. He didn't do a blood test. He gave my cat an antibiotic injection injection, and prescribed amoxicillin and Hill's C/D cat food. This all seems pretty standard.  But he suggested that I keep the cat on the Hill's C/D for good.

This seems drastic for a 2 1/2 year old cat with no prior history of urinary tract problems. What's the normal prescribed length of time to stay on the C/D?

Other information that may or may not be pertinent:
I saw roundworms in his stool on January 20th, and the vet prescribe 1 1/2 18.2mg Drontal pills then and another 1 1/2 pills in 3 weeks.
I adopted him from the shelter in November.

Thanks.

There were no blood tests or any other tests performed. So there wasn't a specific diagnosis, other than "urinary tract infection." That's why it seemed premature to me to prescribe a prescription food for life.

He did prescribe both wet and dry Hill's C/D.

At this point, I'd prefer to go with a high quality non prescription canned food, like Merrick Before Grain, as his sole food. The basic ingredients in the Hill's food seems awful.

If your cat had struvite crystals in his urine than Hills Science diet C/D formula is appropriate for life.  Some cats have the manufacturing capability in their bodies to produce struvite crystals from the ingredients supplied to them in their diet.  C/D is a prescription diet that has eliminated those ingredients so that your cat can no longer produce the crystals.  A cat with a urinary tract problem, whether an infection, inflammation,  or crystal production should be on an all canned or all wet diet with no dry food for life also.  These cats require that extra liquid to always optimize hydration status.
