I'm so sorry for your loss. I notice that you live in Texas, was your dog on a monthly heartworm preventative? Heartworm disease is spread by mosquitoes, and can cause heart failure, and fluid accumulation in the abdomen prior to death. And I agree with Dr. Humphries, something in the abdomen that was obstructing normal lymphatic flow (such as cancer or a clot) could have been the cause. You could have your veterinarian perform an autopsy on her to find out the cause of her death.

That was quite a shock I'm sure.  Medically I can only speculate, but when you say "Hind Quarters" one wonders if you are speaking of her actual legs, or her abdomen.  If it were her abdomen, then she may have bloated and that is a immediate emergency that must be treated medically and surgically or they will many times die.

If it were her legs, then the case is a bit more curious.  Perhaps something that blocked circulation of blood or lymph could have caused the swelling, then a complication from that could have cause a fatal secondary effect.

So sorry you had this happen.  A good relationship with your veterinarian is essential so when something like this is seen, you can call your vet immediately and get help.
