Ganglion Cyst of Wrist ....

I posted a poll on Orthopedics

http://www.medhelp.org/posts/Orthopedics/Ganglion-Cyst---Anybody-have-this/show/921624

Anybody with experience of Ganglion's and arthritis I really appreciate your thoughts here or on the poll.

My daughter has history of reactive arthritis many yrs ago -- they really think she had a mild spondyloarthritis that went into full remission (33% odds we were told) so really don't want anything to spur on a recurrence.  She suffered from it for about 2yrs with a Pedi Rheumy and finally went away completely and now a ganglion out of nowhere erupted on her wrist 6 weeks ago.

Thanks,

C~

It's a gaglion cyst on the tendon in the wrist but not in or affecting the joint itself.  The xray was negative for any joint problems, etc.  That's good news.  She's to take Mobic for 2 weeks and he gave her a brace to be worn mostly 24/7 with a few hours AM/after school to move it around and then wants to see how it responds to non-usage.  He could feel the cyst on the tendon sheath with his fingers and explained that it was congealed like gel inside the cyst and not water-like fluid and that is when/why it begins to hurt, etc.

All in all a good appt and bcz of the pain level she's in he wants her on 15mgs vs. the 7.5mgs of Mobic which she'll start today.

Cherie, that is a rare one!  I am so glad it's benign but still --- to have to go thru this for a child esp. at that age is not easy!  Her appt is Tues.  He's very conservative -- I'm assuming rest, NSAID, brace for 2 weeks and come back and maybe an xray or MRI inbetween if he feels necessary is my best guess @ this point.  Her track coach was surprised.  Throwing Shotput didn't help heal this thing!  But it happened inbetween swimming & track so not really a "sports injury" but aggravated by sports.

Thanks, and you right about the tenacles .. now I recall something about those tenacles reading about that a long time ago.  Yes, I agree .. if anything major is done it should be done by a hand specialist and thanks so much for that reminder!  This is a Pedi Ortho we are seeing whom we know well thru the years and very pleased with, but the hand is the hand .. and of course, it's her dominant right hand.   I read about them doing an MRI to see the extent sometimes which is fine by me to know ahead of time.

I had one on my wrist but it went away as fast as it came a few yrs ago ..

She had her spondylarthritis in her hip, S1, S2, knee and ankle.  That was about 8 yrs ago.

My huband had a 1/2 cm ganglion removed from center of his palm one month ago,,I was quite suprised they insisted on general anestesia...It ws just sub- derma..they used the excuse of what ifs,,,,I had a regular hard cyst on my hand when I was 18 they took it out right then and there in the doctors office a simple 15 min procedure,,a few stitches not a big deal....I get ganglions are different can have "tentacles" or root like structures that could wrap around tendons etc...

My only advice to you is go for the top dog...I would find a specialist...do hand specialists deal with wrists I would thinks so....Cherie
