This is a very common problem, and if you look through the forums you will see lots of similar posts.
Firstly, I think that it would be helpful if you were getting advice from professionals ie. psychologist, occupational therapist etc so that you put together a programme.  Then once you have decided on what you are going to do and how to do it, then you have to be consistent and remember it may take months or even years before he gets it.
You know your son best, and you have to look at how autism affects him to see what might be his difficulty with this.
For example, one child might have difficulties because of generalisation (ie. they learnt what to do in one environment, but haven't learnt to transfer that skill to another environment), or it might be an attention and focus thing where he simply is not aware that he needs the toilet when he is absorbed in doing something else.
There must be some videos and books/pictures out there that you can use to explain to him explicitly what is expected of him.  Some children need to know what happens when the toilet is flushed and need the whole sewage system explaining to them.
Some children, who have sensory issues, may not even feel internal sensations such as the urge to go to the toilet, or they don't feel thirsty, or hungry etc.  If you don't feel the urge, how can you go to the toilet? etc etc.
I would suggest you get advice and decide what the programme is going to be at home and in school.  Then be consistent and review progress every month and adapt the programme depending on what you think your sons strengths and weaknesses are.
If he doesn't appear bothered about being wet or dirty then some or all of his senses might be undersensitive and he may not be getting the same level of sensory input as you get.  If you can't feel the wet or dirty sensation, or your sense of smell or tactile sensation is undersensitive you really won't feel any different to when you are dry and clean.  I don't know what the answer to that is other than to say that routine and anything that can give him more information is going to help.  An OT might be able to advise, if indeed that is the problem.
