Back surgery, pro's and con's

I was told that my doctor could see thinning between my discs in my lower back probably due to arthritis.  I also have something called, "foot drop" which is very annoying, as my foot doesn't work and my leg is very heavy.

My doctor said that, because of the foot thing, I more than likely need back surgery. I asked what that consisted of, and he said stabilazation, such as using rods, etc.

Now, I have heard horror stories about back surguries, and I am afraid as hell.  I also don't do well with anesthesia, but it's the back surgery I'm worried about more.  The doc said they have come a long way as far as back surgeries, but I have heard that once they put in a rod, the disc above and below the rods tend to over-compensate and then they blow too!  He said it is like a vicious circle.

I was given three "gos" for surgery, as I got two opinions, and they all agree that I need this surgery.  Does anyone know how successful they are nowdays?  I have to give them an answer real soon, so any input would be appreciated.

That does help with my decision. I just came back from the doctor and he said that I would have to get two discs worked on, one is in my upper back, and one is the lower.  The lower one they said they can just take the piece out that is pinching my nerve.  The upper one they said would require support, like a rod and some pins.  I told them that I couldn't make that decision and wanted other opinions, and he said he will take my case before the board (of 6 doctors), and he will tell me what they decide on Monday or Tuesday.  That helps a lot as this is a tough decision.

I will keep posting and let you know.  One thing is, I can't take pain meds (narcotics), as I am horribly allergic to them.

I had a fusion done with hardware  at L4-5 S1 and it helped a fair amount. Like you I`ve heard good and bad. I guess if I had a choice again I probly would but after 8 years I take daily painmeds but work at a different type job. Good Luck with whatever you choose.

Hi, thanks for answering.  I did go through physical therapy, but it was so painful that I couldn't continue.  They did say something about a brace to correct my leg, but that would depend on what they see in the MRI.  I go back today at 2pm, and can let you know what they say and get back to you.

What other things can they do?  This way, I can bring these ideas up to the doc today, thanks!
