Growth in back.

Hello-

About 9 or so months ago, I noticed two relatively soft, moveable lumps IN my back, not ON my back. They seem relatively fatty, and I was considering the possibility they were Lipomas, aside from the fact that they are deeply embedded in my back, relatively close to my spine. About 2 weeks ago, I noticed 3 more in the same general area, and the one I had noticed all those months ago now feels massive. I don't have any significant back pain in general. However, occasionally, I will get a sharp shooting pain that drops me for about 15 minutes. This occurs maybe once every few days, nothing I can't live with. I was just curious as to what this could be, and since it is IN my back, what sort of doctor should I consult on the matter? When I asked my MD what the problem could be, without even so much as checking it out she said "lipomas". After researching her rather quick diagnosis (she didn't even feel or look at my back) I researched it a bit, and am unsure as to whether a dermatologist would be able to help me when these growths are so deeply embedded and not at all visible on the surface. Any help I could get would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again! If it helps I am a 21 year old female with no history of back injury. Since the lumps have remained and grown I think it is something more than a swollen lymph node.

I went to the dermatologist today over something unrelated to this, and while I was there I asked him about it, at my MD's recommendation. He said they aren't lipomas, and he can't be sure what they are, because they are at least 6 inches below the skin. He recommended seeing a surgeon if I was concerned about it, but said since I have more than one and they are growing on opposing sides, he wouldn't be too worried. So, if you have them under the skin (not visible) skip the derma. and check out a surgeon.

I have the almost the same thing.  I get a sharp pain next to my spine, and there is a soft and moveable lump in my back, just above the bra strap area, directly next to the spine.   I also have one in my mid lower back.

Does anyone know what this is?

my husband just found one...well, i found it...but he is going to go to the PCP this week and have it looked at...i think it is a lipoma, but i am not a doctor.

i will post what his doc finds...please post if you find something useful...he only has one at this time...and he thinks its been there awhile...also...he said when he pushes on it, he can "feel" it up into his belly...weird...
