Nervous Nerves

I'm a 65 year old man. I have worked as carpenter all of my life. Recently I had some tests to find out why I was having pain in my arms and hands. The EMG and follow up tests revealed carpal tunnel syndrome and muscular atrophy in the hands. They followed up with a MRI and say that I need surgery on my neck for some nerve problem. I don't really understand the logistics of it all, but my question is:
Would it hurt me to wait out the surgery a bit and try some natural things such as exercise, diet, homeopathy, acupuncture etc.?
Would it still be reversible if I wait, or would it be for my benefit to do the surgery now?

you can always try the conservative things first, but when you lose muscle its time to see the surgeon,,the longer you wait the harder to regain that muscle
