I did that back in December of '10 but when I fell I just weakened the tail bone apparantly and then I actually fractured it about 2 weeks later in my sleep.  I first went to the ER in pain and they said there wan't really anything they could do so I went to my chiropractor and she helped the pain quite a bit. Also ice packs help. I had at least a couple weeks of pretty bad pain but then mine seemed to start feeling better and I'd say within a month I was pretty much back to normal.

How long does it take the pain to go away from just falling on your butt and possibly breaking or brusing your tailbone?

Um, you'd better listen to optimus22mac.  My Coccyx broke off 20+ years ago, so apparently my belief that nothing could be done to remove it is antiquated. Sorry.

I fractured my coccyx and had surgery to remove the damaged part that would not heal.  There are many differing degrees of tailbone pain/injury...and a great site is coccyx.org.
You can read about others' experiences of varying severity, and learn about different therapies:)
Immediately following my fall (down stairs....landing a flight down completely on my tailbone), an x-ray showed a fracture--sort of a smush....but usually the only thing to do is wait to see how it heals.  Some people end up healing completely, and some do not.  There is nothing you can do immediately (like put a cast on it), so there are pillows you can buy, and pain meds you can take, and it can be very very painful.  If you would like to, you can message me privately if you have specific questions.
I broke mine Dec 2007, had surgery May 2009, and still have severe pain...possibly due to some damage done to the sacrum--which cannot be removed.

I broke my tailbone completely off of my spine when I was 13yrs. old!  I have the X-rays to prove it.  I had to sit on one of those donut shaped "hemohhroid" pillows for a month straight, and that was it.  My behind was very sore/painful until it healed.  It was just left inside me, as there's nothing that can be done about it. Almost 30yrs. later, and the only symptom I ever had after that was that my behind would "fall asleep" if I sat for too long. I hope this helped you. Oh, I had it X-rayed the next day after I fell down the stairs, when it started hurting really bad.  Take advil for the swelling/pain. Good luck.
