AFter FNA the pathologhy came back Bi-rad 4b

I am 46 with history of breast cancer in my family.  I was advised after the FNA that some atypical cells were found and the recommnedation was to excise the lesion.  The wording in the report was "extremely atypical aspirate showing nuclei and mucinous degerneration"  What does this mean? the pathology results said the nodule was 8mm in the left breast and "high risk".  What is the likelihood that this is not cancer?  Is that possible/

Dear brcino,  There is the possiblity that this is not cancer for example it could be an atypical hyperplasia finding.  Atypical hyperplasia is not cancer or precancer but it may indicate a higher risk of getting cancer. It is best to follow up with further evaluation so you have a better idea of what you are dealing with.

I do have an appointment with a breast surgeon appointment.  In preparation I got the films  fro the last few mamographies I have had, also the slides from the pathology and the sono report.  In reading the reports from the mamo -- I just noticed that in 2005 they indicated int the report that there was a 8mm nodule which appears at the 9 o'clock region of the middle depth in left breast.  Additional views and ultrasound of the left breast were recommended.  This atypical cells that they found just this week are a 8mm nodule at 9o'clock in the left breast!!!  Could this be the same atypical cell?  Would it have stayed the same for five years?  I never had an FNA of my left breat before this week and I did have one of my R breast several years ago which was a cyst.  If this were a problematic nodule would it have stayed the same all this time?
