Nipple Discharge

I am 39 and had a breast biopsy of the left breast in 2003 due to microcalcifcations which showed ADH bordering DCIS arising in blunt duct adenosis.  The radiologists could not agree as to whether it was atypia to small foci of low grade DCIS.  I had a re-excision which did not show any DCIS but showed ADH and intradcuctal papillomatosis.  Three days ago I awoke to a small stain on my nightshirt and went to the breast specialist immediately.  The "blood tinged" discharge is coming from one duct on the left breast near the site of the prior biopsy.  Although there is no papable lump or any other symptoms she has me scheduled for a mammo and ultrasound followed by surgery to remove the duct.  The discharge now only comes out if squeezed.  Can you please tell me what are the chances that this is malignant and if it could be what type of cancer could this be?  The doctor tells me I should not worry that it could be a papilloma, but then why the surgery?  I'm a nervous wreck.  Thanks for your help.

Plant estrogen-like substances (phytoestrogens) are present in many grains, cereals and especially soy products. Women who have a high intake of soy products are known to have less menopausal hot flushes because of the estrogenic activity of these substances. Most of these phytoestrogens are very weak and it takes a moderate amount of dietary intake to notice an estrogen effect. A major question that occurs is whether the phytoestrogens have an estrogenic effect on breast cells.

Dear Tg409:  A common source of bloody nipple discharge is papilloma, a benign wart-like growth within a duct.  However, given your history of ADH, which does increase your risk for developing breast cancer, removing the duct would 1) eliminate the source of the bleeding and 2) provide a definitive pathologic diagnosis.
