Ultrasound guided biopsy for microcalcifications

If the breast is too small or the calcifications are too close to chest wall why can't an ultrasound guided biopsy be performed instead of a stereotactic biopsy.  I was told the other option would be surgical incision to remove the calcifications.

In these difficult aspect of microcalcification, do you see the value of the specimen radiography systems? The new and improved digital resolution of some such as CoreVISION (ww.bioptics-inc.com) offer a clear advantage over other options.
Do you agree? Any comments?

Dear keeper007, Decision about type of biopsy is based on several factors including location of the area of concern, size of area, what they think will be most appropriate (least invasive to obtain the needed information).

In stereotactic biopsy, computer-assisted X-rays allow the biopsy needle to be precisely positioned, especially for smaller lumps or lumps that cannot be felt.  Special mammogram films are taken of the site to be biopsied.  The radiologist uses these films and, with the assistance of a computer, calculates the exact location for needle placement to obtain the biopsy.

Microcalcifications do not show up on ultrasound, so if they are the target - an ultrasound guided biopsy would not be used.
