nervous about biopsy results

I found a lump July 3...no one took me too seriously.  It has gotten smaller and then larger again during mid cycle.  It has begun to be painful during mid cycle.  It is also moveable, which I know is a good sign.  Mammo was negative, US stated no evidence of malignancy, but when the breast surgeon saw he films, he confirmed that there was in fact something there.  Clinically feels that it is likely a fibroadenoma or mammery dysplasia.  I have opted for an excisional biopsy which will occur next week.  I am anxious to have this out and put this entire experience behind me, but I am very worried about he possible results!  I had a sister who died at 40 of liver/somach cancer so I am very cancerphobic.  For my piece of mind I know I am making the correct decision o remove the mass.  Do fibroadenomas change size over the course of a menstral cycle?  I am almost 43...am I too old for a fibroadenoma?  Is mammery displasia a precancerous/cancerous condiion?  Thanks for your answers!

I had a breast needle biopsy three weeks ago and it showed abnormal cells.  I questioned the doctor about what here definition of abnormal was.  She said the cells were atypical, not the kind of cells that are normally in the breast.  She suggested excision and biopsy of the cyst.  I had the surgery last Thursday, 10-2-03.  All we know at this point is that the cyst was "egg size".  We are waiting nervously for the pathology report.  Anyone have any comments on atypical cells and what they mean and if a cyst is larger than what can be felt.  I have dense breasts and this was one the reasons I was sent to see a surgeon, because the radiologist had trouble determining what they were seeing.  I am quite nervous, but trying to stay on the positive side.  I would appreciate any insight.  Thank you, this is a great web site.

Thanks for you kind words.  Had the surgery yesterday.  Went really well.  Can't believe how kind and gentle everyone was.  the frozen section came back benign and I assume, so will the full pathology report.  I am very relieved and ready to put this behind me and move on with my life.  It is amazing what three months of continuous fear and anxiety can do to you!  My prayers go out to all of you still struggling!

Dear mel4, A fibroadenoma is a type of benign (non-cancerous) breast lump.  Often these have a distinctive feel to them and are usually distinct on a mammogram or ultrasound test.  Fibroadenomas can occur at any age, but they would more likely be biopsied or removed as a person is older, just to be on the safe side.  Usually a fibroadenoma would not change much over the course of one menstrual cycle.  Mammary dysplasia means an abnormality cells in breast tissue.  That in itself is not a precancerous/cancerous condition, but may be a risk factor for breast cancer.
