my wife and I had genital herpes for years, now I read that people with genital herpes are at a higher risk of having cervical cancer, is it true and is there anything we can do to lessen the risk. I really appreciate your answer, thank you!
Cervical cancer is rare with average lifetime risk being less than 1% (0.6% per U.S. gov't statistics). High risk HPV types cause most cervical cancers. And according to this site https://www.cancer.org/cancer/cervical-cancer/causes-risks-prevention/risk-factors.html the HPV type(s) associated with genital warts are low risk.
Also, as long as one follows the guidelines for pap smears (every 3 years for paps or every 5 years for co-testing of pap and HPV), any abnormal cervical changes (dysplasia) can be caught plenty early. Abnormal cervical cells take many years to progress to cancer.
