rocking and counting?

My son is 4 years old. At various times during the day he will sit in a chair and just start counting 1,2,3,1,2,3,1,2,3 constantly while rocking. I can't figure out why he does it or if he needs to see his ped. Any help?

Have you had your child tested for signs of autism?  My gf's son is 14 and has autism and exhibits the same behavior you just described.  He is a straight A student, memorized things well, but exhibits the same behavior as seen in Dustin Hoffman's role in "Rain Man".  He rocks back and forth, swings his arms aimlessly, and generally shows signs of restlessness and quick boredom because his mind cannot reach a relaxed state.  It also causes sleep disorders in him as well as gives him constant nightmares as his subconscious mind is manifesting frightening images in his sleep.  Please take your child to a pediatric mental health professional because this behavior is a warning sign and not to be taken lightly.  Get it checked out for your piece of mind.

As with any particualr behavior, its importance is determined by the context in which it occurs. If he is developing well overall (in the cognitive, physical, social and emotional domains), the behavior does not invite concern. It sounds like the behavior is a self soothing behavior, but I can't assume that without knowledge of his overall developmental status.
