Sorry, did not mean to be unclear about family life.  Anyone in any family can  look at themselves and family members to some extent.  By family life I mean anything you may relate to, for help or problem solving.  I cannot pinpoint any one particular item-no two families are the same so in that way looking at each family situation is different.

If your doctor has prescribed only medication and not provided any information about resources I guess it is up to you to ask him.  If you are not comfortable with this approach your local mental health agency or local state social services agency has information about support services and "clarification" services.

Your situation is not different as far as concerns over medication in dealing with hyperactive children. Your questioning about your son's medication is good because you want to know the comprehensive, long term outcomes the medication provides.

You received good, direct information specific to your question from the other respondent.

You question the future benefits of the prescription your son is receiving.  This shows that you need more ongoing information and support and that you may have determined you are not getting this from your child's doctor.

The last sentence about information and support is easy to say, more difficult to carry out and reap the rewards.  Any parent with a hyperactive child can use some degree of ongoing information and support.  In this regard parent support groups are one consideration to investigate.

Your child will be starting kindergarten possibly this Fall or next. Schools may have other resources for your child. Schools will want to know your child's medical and behavioral information. This is a good thing because as much as possible the education can be provided with consideration to your child's needs.

Your misgivings about the long range benefits of the medication can rightfully belong to any parent.  It comes with the territory.

One more consideration is that medication, services, books and whatever else are not complete answers or cure alls, although it is definitely worthwhile to pursue such help. It is like a democracy.  "A democracy is a terrible form of government fraught with problems - however no one has been able to come up with anything better."

The use of Zoloft to address anger in children is a reasonable use of the medication. It is your son's age that makes the use of the medication a bit unusual. However, the medication is not addicitive; that is a worry you needn't have. Do you think he is receiving some benefit from the medication?
