Jojo_my_baby

Hi tony,
The article Chronic Kidney Failure is very informative, the symptoms written are similar as my pet is going through.
Tony, my Jojo CERUM CRETANINE is 11.3 which is very high as per your statistics, it means my Jojo life is very less.
Please help me to save him and live him longer.
I am showing him to a Veterinary Dr, and he put him in dip ( glucose and inject medicine), but that insertion of candula hurts him as well as me, so i change the Dr after giving 3 days of treatment.
The second Dr giving him, syrups liver tonics, but my dog vomit every thing. As jojo has no interest in Food, so we give him vegetable soup and Dalia ( wheat product) suggested by doctor forcefully.
Day by day he is getting weak, his bones are deforming and cannot walk few steps. He drink water an half cup only.

Please suggest, i cannot see him like this.
Save him, i beg you.
(If need any further information, please write to me)
Thanks in advance.
Sunil (INDIA).

Sunil. When you hadn't responded to my earlier messages, I feared the worst. I am so very sorry to read about Jojo. Please accept my sincerest condolences on your loss.

Kidney disease is very unpredictable and when it takes a turn for the worst, sometimes even the most intensive treatments fail to work. You did all that you could possibly do under the circumstances and I'm sure Jojo would say, if he could, a huge thank you to you for caring and loving him so much.

I hope you will come back here and chat ... just so we know you are okay. Grief can be hard - but we are here for you, if you need us. Sometimes other people don't understand the loss we feel as pet owners. But here, we DO understand.

Run free Jojo.

Tony,

JOJO is no more with us, he take his last breath on Saturday i.e., 19 september @ 21:00 pm (IST).
I am sorry JOJO, I am not with you when you left us, I know you are looking for me but I could make it possible.
I lost my best friend, he is really a stress buster for me, he is with me when I am going through the saddest phase of my life, he is there to make me smile. JOJO is a member of my family, he love kids a lot, play with them.
He love me more than anyone, look for me always, wait for me to come from office and he loves going out with me and I also love outing with him.
I am sorry that I not able to understand, what pain and stress you are going through. You’re my baby, I miss you a lot, never forget you.
May JOJO soul Rest In Peace.
Thanks for your care and support.

I meant to add ... you will almost certainly need a prescription from your vet for the fluids. Do you think they will provide it?

A couple of really good instructions (the second is a video) of how to administer SubQ Fluids. If you manage to get the fluids and the equipment needed, I will let you know the amounts to give according to the weight, size and age of Jojo:

You can buy Lactated Ringers fluids online, but I honestly don't know whether you can get them posted to India. It would definitely be better looking for a supplier in your country and calling them to ask about delivery.

Hello Sunil. First, I am really sorry, but we cannot give out our telephone numbers or other personal details. We would be absolutely inundated with both genuine and not-so-genuine phone calls if we did that.

In terms of SubQ fluids ... I totally understand how very difficult this is for you. Before we go on to discuss anything else, are you able to get hold of Lactated Ringers SubQ Fluids? If you can't, then there's not much point in us talking further about the treatment technique and we would be better talking about other possible (but probably less successful) measures.

I realise this is so very hard for you, mainly due to where you are located. I will do all I can to help. You are an extremely kind individual and Jojo is so lucky to have you in his life.

Thanks Tony,

I start doing the same as you suggested hope it will help the poor fellow, what circumstances and pain he is going on i cannot even think.
In INDIA, doctors dont take animals seriously, they even dont listen to us. What they do they do it own, if i suggest him or tell him then he annoyed.
I have to myself do all the things for JOJO.

Can u please tell me how many times i have to give SUBQ, i try to vaccine him at home.
Also, tony how i can approach you or contact you other than this way.Any online calling or anyother means.
Please, tell me the time when you will be availaible.

Thanks for your concerns and your suggestions, it really helps me a lot.

Hope Jojo live longer.

Thanks,

Sunil (INDIA)

Hi. The first things that jump out at me from the blood testing is that Jojo has an infection and needs antibiotics. The very high TLC suggests this. It is probably a urinary tract infection, which is not uncommon in kidney failure.

The other thing are the very high BUN and creatinine which mean Jojo needs fluids. If these blood values stay at this level and are not reduced, then sadly, he will not survive very long. If you feel IV fluids cannot be given (due to it being so painful and stressful for him), then SubQ fluids might be tried - these are still injected, but they are done under the skin rather than direct into a vein. You will need your vet to undertake this initially, and then you can be taught how to do it at home, if it proves to be successful. Your vet MUST use Lactated Ringers (for SubQ fluids) and not saline solution. He should also add to the fluid bags any necessary nutrients, minerals, medicines and vitamins he thinks may be necessary and according to the latest blood results.

I also believe Jojo is severely under-nourished. This is not surprising if he has been vomiting food back up. The ondansetron is intended to help reduce acid in the stomach and encourage eating. It may not be working, so your vet should start something else - maybe Pepcid is worth trying.

In the meantime, fluids are the important thing - can you make him a chicken broth - human-grade chicken boiled with water (no salt, no herbs, nothing else added) - cook it fully, let it cool completely, then strain. Jojo might not eat the chicken flesh (great if he does) - but he may lap at the broth, which will give both hydration and nourishment. This might keep him going for a short time, while SubQ fluids can be organised.

The other big thing is to try feeding very small meals more often. So, divide a normal dog's meal into 6 parts, and feed them at equal times during the day and evening. This will help reduce the stress on the kidneys.

Vegetables are not particularly nutritious for dogs, although they do add some vitamins. Jojo really needs some meat protein but it needs to be high-quality protein, the kind of meats and chicken that you yourself would buy to eat. The best would be a specially bought kidney dog food, which has all the right ingredients in it, but I understand you may not be able to buy it there - and Jojo might not necessarily eat it, as it's fairly unpalatable.

Have a look at some of my articles at www.tonyboothwriter.com as I have written quite a lot about kidney failure and how it affects dogs.

Hope some of this helps.

Sorry, the other thing you definitely need for Jojo is some antacid and anti-nausea medication. Your vet should supply this for you. But you could also try some Slippery Elm and a small amount of cooked cabbage, both will help. Milk Thistle is another useful supplement, which helps protect the liver against damage.

Hello Sunil

I am really sorry you and Jojo are trying to deal with this dreadful disease. Unfortunately, fluids are the first line of defense, although I have a feeling your vets are not giving the right fluids. Fluids need to be balanced according to the blood results. So, not saline drips, and not glucose. The normal type of fluids for dogs in CKF are Lactated Ringer type, which are in an IV or SubQ bag. If you are able to do SubQ fluids at home, it would be cheaper for you and less stressful on your dog - ask your current vet, who would need to teach you how to undertake this kind of treatment.

Has your vet taken Jojo's blood pressure? If not, it needs doing.

If bones are deforming, then calcium and phosphorus may be an issue. Do you have the blood results with you? If so, tell me what the calcium and phosphorus levels are.

What kind of diet is Jojo on? Are you aware it needs to be low phosphorus and with some high-quality protein and carbohydrates. Fatty meats are good too, such as chicken cooked with the skin on. All vegetable should be peeled and cooked to reduce phosphorus intake. White rice is good. Sticky rice even better.

It would be much better to get a tinned/canned renal dog food in Jojo, but I don't know whether you can buy that where you are. Specialised renal diets have the right balance of ingredients and are low in things like sodium and phosphorus.
