Candidia

Hi, I'm wondering about Candidiasis (sp?) and how/what tests are done for a doctor to determine if you have the infection in your gut?  Is there a simple blood test?  I know they can do an EGD with a biopsy.  I've heard that this a very overlooked thing and I'm Hypothyroid so I want to ask my doctor about it, but have as much info before hand as possible.  Thanks for any advice.

Candida infection begins in the genital area.  If left untreated, of if the overuse of antibiotics to cure repeated infections creates a very friendly environment for it, it then moves inside the body into the organs in some people.  So the first question would be, have you had repeated or intractable yeast infections?  If not, it's unlikely you have it in your organs, but if you're concerned, see your doctor for a test.  If you do have it, there are symptoms, including fatigue and overall weakness similar to chronic fatigue, so if you have no symptoms of it doctors probably won't order tests.

Gotcha!  Thanks for clarifying.  Nope, I've been on thyroid medicine for almost two years now and have had two Endocrinologists that wanted to take me off the medicine because they didn't think I was truly hypothyroid.  I was put on it, by my PCP.  Long story, but I read on one of they thyroid boards that a lot of the symptoms are consistent with Candida.  I think you've cleared it up for me though.  Thank you!!

I meant thrush is candida, not that it isn't, but that sometimes things people think are candida aren't.  But again, if you had thrush, you would know it and unless you ignored it you wouldn't get it into your organs.

You can get thrush, yes.  You'd have a white tongue.  But that isn't necessarily candida, it can be other fungi, and again, seldom would it get into the organs unless left untreated for a long time.

thanks for the info.  I was not aware that it always began in the genital region.  I thought that it could come on as thrush or breakout in your gut since it's already there.  Thanks for the info.  Guess I don't need to ask my doc about this after all.
