What's the best Lactose-Free Probiotic for a 10 yr old?

My son is recovering from a severe intestinal infection that medicine& thehelp of wonderful Pedi GI  finally corrected after he lost 10lbs in a week and was in excruciating pain for days.  It was so bad they thought he had either a bowel perforation or gallstones (his appendix was removed earlier in life so at least that wasn't a possibility but scar tissue was).

His Pedi GI suggested lactose-free probiotics for him to help restore his regularity and he now has a temporary lactose intolerance going on with all those symptoms.  Poor kid .. just doesn't seem fair, but this is the way it is so want to try to help him get back to normal.

Cultural was mentioned  by the GI's office?

Thanks.

Maybe your should talk to your son's doctor about taking Cholestyramine powder.  It's by prescription, and to take Benifiber.  The Cholestyramine absorbs the fat.  It was originally for cholesterol.

I knew someone who took two products and she does well.  You have to play with the Cholestyramine powder till you get the right dose so you don't get constipated.  That's why you take the fiber. The Cholestyramine you might not have to take every day when you get the dose down to the amount that is good for you.  The lady I knew who took it has done so for years, and she had 18" of her intestine removed as well as her gallbladder.

I'm glad he's back to normal.  I hope he stays that way!

Oh, sorry, you mentioned the child is 10 in the header.  Didn't notice until now.  I think at 10 the child can probably take pretty much any product, but I'd start with Natren.  The owner had been doing it forever, and is very conservative; many of the organisms included in some formulas haven't been proven safe or effective and haven't traditionally been used.  She won't put any of those in her products.  As for lactose free, most companies will make lactose free products these days.  Nature's Way has also been around forever and is a good company.  Avoid all muli-level products, as they're very secretive, and don't shop at GNC or any like chain -- they'll sell anything.

In the natural med biz, the company considered the best and safest is Natren.  For regularity, however, make sure whatever you buy emphasizes bifidus along with the acidophilus; that's most responsible for regularity.  But for children, it might be different; you didn't say how young your child is, but very young children have different needs than older ones.  This is especially true if the child wasn't breast fed, which is how the natural process of developing the proper probiotics occurs.  Nature's Way makes a good child's probiotic for young children.  Whatever you buy, make sure it's in the refrigerator of the store; these are bacteria, and need to hibernate of else they start dying on the shelf.  And as the above post points out, try to avoid antibiotics as much as possible.  Only take them when absolutely necessary to save your life, because they do destroy these bacteria, and the more you take them the harder it is to get the beneficial bacteria to permanently find a comfy place to adhere in the intestinal tract.

It is expensive, but I have heard good things about the Culteral...sp?
Otherwise my suggestion sould be to go to your local healthfood store and look for a good one that is in the billion count.
Poor baby .... I feel so bad for him.
I know of a product that is the only thing that has ever taken care of my candida problem, but I dont know if your store in the area carries it....it is miraculous in my opinion. I had tried every cleanse and every probiotic and this stuff worked! It is called Candida Freedom by Massey Medicinals....you can google their website. This is the only product this company makes. You can use it internally or externally.
I use to get yeast infections with every antibiotic and i recently did 3 rounds of harsh antibiotics without any negative affects.
Call the company and see if they will sell it to you on line.....don't know if they will....otherwise give them the name of your local healthfood store for them to contact and send free samples. (That is what i did) and then maybe your store will carry it.
