Hi!
Yes, inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis can cause what is known as enteropathic arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis is one such enteropathic arthritis which also has a genetic component.
Usually enteropathic arthritis has a waxing and waning course with flares lasting up to 6 weeks and then subsiding. However, sometimes there is a destructive course with no remission as the IBS causing the arthritis cannot be kept under control.
If a bleed is suspected then an occult stool test can be done to rule out or confirm this. Immune modulators can be tried to boost up his immune system. Steroids, diet modifications and other treatments (such as aminosalicylates or 5-ASA, antibiotics, and biologic therapies) have to be tried to see what suits him best.
Please discuss with his treating specialists.Take care!

I have both a gastro and rheumatologist. The rheum. is knowledgeable with IBD (I have Crohn's) and they work together with the therapies. My AS symptoms usually coincide with my IBD flares.
I just found out about 2 months ago that I have ankylosing spodilitis. And now have been told that my blood work is "highly suggestive" of crohns.
That is soooo bizzaire. I dont understand how a stomach issue and arthritis can go hand in hand.
Maybe cause I dont fully understand crohns. I dont see the gastro dr for about 3 wks yet....I am getting beyond myself waiting.
Hi,
I have Crohn for a long time, and recently connected the missing dots between the pain in my back and right shoulder and Crohn. Read this article that explains the link between spondylitis and crohn, reduce the starch in your diet and you will be just fine. All my symptoms disappeared on low carb diet.
