Man kills Alabama bus driver, holds child hostage underground

(CNN) -- A gunman boarded a school bus in Alabama, killed the driver, took a 6-year-old boy hostage and hours later was still holding him in an underground bunker, police said.
The incident started Tuesday afternoon and continued Wednesday morning with authorities still desperately trying to free the young child.
Late in the evening Tuesday, the man had the child in some sort of underground bunker or storm shelter, and authorities were communicating with him through a PVC pipe, CNN affiliate WSFA reported.
"We will continue to work diligently through the night in an effort to bring closure to this incident as quickly as possible," the Dale County Sheriff's Department said late Tuesday.
Adding to the tension was the fact that the child needs medication that has to be taken daily, CNN affiliate WDHN reported.
Overnight, authorities were able to send the child's medication down the pipe into the bunker and also determine that the boy had not been physically harmed, WDHN reported.
The incident started at about 3:40 p.m. (4:40 p.m. ET) near a church in Midland City, Alabama, in the southeastern corner of the state.
Michael Senn, a local pastor, told WSFA that he spoke to several students who had been on the bus.
He said a girl described the shooter getting aboard.
"He told most of them to get off the bus," Senn related. "And then he grabbed a little boy and shot the bus driver four times." The driver's body was removed from the bus early Wednesday, WDHN reported.
Mike Creel, the suspect's neighbor, said he also talked to some of the children who escaped the bus. It was a terrifying scene, Creel told the affiliate.
The suspect initially demanded two children, Creel told WSFA.
"The one child he got ahold of actually fainted," said Creel. "That was the reason he was able to grab him. And now he is hidden in his homemade bomb shelter."
Creel said the suspect had been living in the area for about two years and began building the shelter right when he moved in.
Authorities have not released the name of the suspected gunman.
Early in the morning, local authorities allowed the FBI to take the lead in the hostage situation, WDHN reported.

Oh dear god!...How the heck was this unstable mess of a man able to get a GUN?.....This is why we need stricter laws for access to guns..I don't care what anyone says...IF he didn't have a gun that bus driver would probably still be alive...This is just INSANE....

Yeah I mean a knife could nto have killed that bus driver right? People are going to do what they want to do no matter what.

People can be sane and snap about something. Hence the courts have a defense for that.

The bus driver would have probably been able to fight off a knife attack than 4 shots to the torso...

Why does everyone get up in arms about things like this but pretty silent when you have gang bangers killing each other daily. Is it because they are criminals and no one cares? Is it because they are majority black and latino?

Things like above and Sandy Hook is not the norm. The norm is Chicago, Compton, Oakland...shootings daily. Stricter gun laws may stop the 1% but the other 99% it is not going to affect. This is something that has not and will not be addressed because both parties are cowards.

I agree but none of these are "the norm"...Its all out of control and it does need to be addressed..But I've said before, If 1 life can be saved, it's better than none...

If you talk to anyone who has been in a knife fight they will tell you that it is nothing like you see in the movies, you are not going to fight it off.

I have not talked to anyone but I did read a book from an ex navy seal who has and gives the honest truth about it.

Now make no mistake I am not saying this is not horrible but it is not the norm.

Are you kidding me?  At least with a knife he could have fought back?  That is completely hypothetical and must have been based on what you've seen in the movies.

Did you know this guy?  Was he skilled in the art of defending ones self against a knife attack?

For a good laugh, go to google images and punch in knife attack wounds.  Yeah... good luck with that knife attack.

I bet that guy wishes someone, anyone, by any means would have been present to stop this guy.

In the very least, thank GOD no children were shot.

?.....This is why we need stricter laws for access to guns..I don't care what anyone says...IF he didn't have a gun that bus driver would probably still be alive...This is just INSANE.... .

With all due respect...that's just a lot of assumptions.  He may perfectly pass a check to a buy a gun, or like any other bad guy, stole it, or bought it off the street.  You're assuming he wouldbn't have gained access to a gun with "stricter laws" in place.  Bet he would have.

If this crime was committed with a pistol, or handgun...the new bill wouldn't do a thing to stop this guy....just food for thought.

Listen, my point is, a Knife would have not done as much damage..The boy that was taken fainted probably because of the gun shots, and he was terrified..I know you don't think guns are the problem but I do..I have a right to that opinion..The truth of the matter is, IF this guy did NOT have a gun, that bus driver may not be dead and that kid would've probably escaped like the rest of them...This guys is OBVIOUSLY disturbed. I mean he has a bomb shelter for god sake. How was he able to get a gun? It was obviously easy for him. That's where my stance is. The laws should be stricter for access to guns...

I can assume whatever I want.....I'm not going to do this with either of you. I have stated my opinion. You both can mock all you want. Vance and I were actually having a nice discussion until you two came along..You are more than welcome to join with common sense responses about the topic. A MAJORITY of the American people and GUN OWNERS want stricter guns laws and Universal background checks..YES I think it would have stopped this idiot from getting a gun..Like I've said before, if it saves 1 life, it's better than not doing anything at all...

Does anybody know where this guy got the gun?  Aren't there already laws in place about not being able to board a school bus with a gun?

There was a thing going around yesterday about the one father from Sandy Hook being "heckled" by some pro gun advocates.  That in and of itself, if true heckling is tasteless.

What wasn't being broadcasted is the one father who lost a child who stepped up and said, "there are enough gun laws on the books already.''  We didn't hear a lot of that.  I saw it one time on CNN headline news.  1 time, but the father being heckled was looped.

I am seeing news reports saying this guy has a "bomb shelter" and a tornado shelter. By the description in most reports, it is a tornado shelter. Almost every single home and property in AL and southeaster states have these types of shelters in their yards--THAT is nothing unusual, and I think the media is trying to sensationalize it.
This is nearly a local situation for me--it's not too far, anyway. All I know is I feel so awful that this poor little boy is going to face a lifetime of post-trauma effects from this, if God willing he makes it out alive.

Here you go saying "the fact of the matter is" then you go on to say "probably this" and "probably that".  That is hypothetical and no where near a fact.  And it is facts that people will not listen to.

And you can assume whatever you want, but by all means, do not let facts dictate what you feel or assume.

By the way, nobody is mocking you....

This bus driver had just as good of a chance surviving a gun attack as he did a knife attack.  People get shot multiple times and live.  Getting shot is not a death sentence.  People survive gun shots.  People survive knife attacks.  (Those are facts...)

You don't know the health of the bus driver.  Health has a lot to do with it.  If this bus driver were a diabetic heart patient, his health is certainly compromised and any number of things could kill the guy, including exertion during a knife fight.  (That is a fact...)

Absolutely the media is sensationalizing this.  It fits the agenda... make the guy look as nuts as possible with a "bomb shelter (wooooo, sounds a lot more scary than a tornado shelter, eh?".

I'm using these phrases because I am not claiming to know it all...I'm not claiming to know how to solve the issue of gun violence, I am simply commenting on what I think could've been prevented..You can disagree and that's fine...

I think 4 shots to the torso close range will KILL ANYONE....

BTW, this is what I said..

Is that not the truth?

It just has me shaking my head because that is such a typical structure in almost every single yard around here, and the media is calling it everything from a bomb shelter to a bunker.
During April 27, 2011 reports about our killer tornadoes, the news certainly had no problem calling all these structures exactly what they are.
Not that that doesn't take away from the severity of this situation, but it certainly doesn't HELP it. Add words like "bomb shelter" and "bunker" into a hostage situation and shooting and people get more hyped up about it when that will help nothing get solved.

Thanks for sharing that...I thought a bomb shelter might be a little strange but then again to some it may not be...lol

I mean heck, we've had tornado watches and warnings throughout our state since last night anyway.
EVERYBODY around here has "bomb shelters," and use them pretty frequently.

For as much as FoxNews generally has a "bad" reputation, it is so far the ONLY news site that has called the "bomb shelter" what it really is--a tornado shelter.

"The Dale County coroner Woodrow Hilboldt told The Associated Press the overnight standoff continued early Wednesday with tactical units, negotiators and other officers at the scene near a church. He said the suspect was believed to be in an area described as a place "to get out of the way of a tornado."

Even our local stations are calling the thing a "bunker" and "bomb shelter."
Ridiculous.

I'm sure!  I find it amazing and sickening that the media would even CHOOSE those words.  Sensationalism at its finest.  No wonder people get in such an uproar over any issue...with the way the media reports.

I don't think so...

"I made a post!!!  I posted MY opinion like you posted mine.  Sheesh!!!!  If you want to call that mocking fine...but perhaps you're not aware what "mocking" is.

You are really something.....Mocking- Verb-     Tease or laugh at in a scornful or contemptuous manner.
Make (something) seem laughably unreal or impossible.

YOU: "

So if that's not mocking then maybe I am dumb...

NG, First of all You posted your comment against my comment not the actual article...Do me a favor, like you say, if we can't seem to discuss anything, don't bother commenting on anything I post? I don't go on your threads and bother you right? If anything I stick to the topic and leave what I think of your opinion out of it...

Brice and I have actually moved on so I suggest you do the same...
