6 year old had loose tooth knocked out

Today, Sunday, my 6 year old had one of his top teeth knocked out.  His brother and him were playing and they came up at the same time.  Anyway, this tiith was already loose, but it appears that there was no root on the tooth.  When I look in his mouth I see a little white piece.  Could this been the permanent tooth or still part of the baby tooth.  Is it an emergency to get him in somewhere today or just make an appt. with the pediatric dentist this week?

Thanks.  I took him in yesterday and they took an x-ray.  Everything is good.

It sounds like it was a baby tooth that had the root resorbed by the adult tooth underneath.  It was probably going to come out at some point in time in the future anyways because the front top teeth usually come out around his age (6-7 yrs of age on average).  It may not be a bad idea to get it checked out though just to make sure as I'm not able to see it, etc.
