NEED ADVICE

I have a friend who is very depressed I believe. She sleeps all day and never goes out anymore. When I visit with her which is usually every other day she is usually in the same clothes from the previous visit. When I try to bring up my concerns for her, she denies anything is wrong with her. I know that she does eat and I don't think that she is suicidal but when should someone intervene to help her? Do I just leave her alone and hope that she comes out of it or wait until she asks for help? I am afraid that if I don't do anything, she will just continue to get worse. This has been going on for about 4 months now. Thanks for any advice...

Renee, my best friend provided the encouragement and support necessary when she made an appointment for me to see a psychiatrist and took me to the appointment.  When I once had to be hospitalized for a few days, she was the one who took me then too.  She may not be willing to do things herself, but might go along with it if you take the initiative.

Best wishes.

Does she have family?

When a person is that depressed, they can't even help themselves.  They don't see a way and don't believe there is a way.

I would definitely contact some family who may have to intervene in some way.  She may not be capable of seeking treatment for herself at this time.

Dear Renee,

Your friend is fortunate that she has someone who cares for her.
Unfortunately, the first step to improvement is recognizing the presence of a problem.

It is difficult to determine the proper course of action.
Your friend has the right to live the way she wants as long as it doesn't endanger herself or others.

I recommend you continue to express your concerns to her. You may also consider giving her some pamphlets about depression and treatment options.

If she becomes a danger to self or others, contact the police.

Best Wishes,
