I used mometasone prescribed by a dermatologist on the meatus and under towards frenulum area once per day for 6 days. Actually seemed to be helping and I was thinking about stopping at that point. I wish I did. Then a new primary care doctor switched me to lotrisone and told me it was the same thing but with anti-fungal mixed in and to put it all over my glans and even to pinch my meatus and put some down there twice per day, which I did for 6 days. I ended up getting a good bit down the urethra each time. Everything was fine (except the skin changes, like it had unadherred from the underlying glans tissue) until I stopped using it. My dermatologist later said lotrisone should never be used on genitals or the face as it is too strong and I should throw it away. Over the next two days the burning started: urethra, all of the penis skin and even portions of the scrotum were burning/tingly/numb and red at times. It's been two weeks since stopping the cream. (I was on levaquin/levofloxin at the same time) The scrotum seems ok now, and the cutaneous skin below the circumcision scar line is ok, but the smooth mucosa above the glans still burns a bit, gets way way worse with sex, especially without a condom. The urethra has been burning too. At the moment, the worst is on the top of the glans and the corona of the glans. It is way too sensitive for sex and even underwear. I wake up early in the morning to a hot penis, applying ice packs leaving the penis very cold, but the burning sensation is still there. I am hoping it gets better in a month more time, but honestly I don't see any evidence of recovery from anyone. My doctors so far have totally dismissed this burning sensation and how it could be damage like steroid atrophy or withdrawal. My dermatologist just said it could thin the skin and that I should be fine if used for only 6 days. When I tell them it went down the urethra they wince and look horrified, but then tell me it is fine and won't cause a problem. They need to take this cream off the market for male genitalia use, or limit it's use to 3 days once per day max. I should have asked for just the clotrimazole without the betamethasone diproprionate. I'm praying this gets bearable within a month cessation, but nobody seems to have experienced that. I'm struggling psycologically, thinking of breaking up with my girlfriend and committing suicide; just being honest, I'm probably too chicken to do it. I can't believe this is happening to me. The original urethra stinging/irritation is gone and now I have a much worse, possibly permanent condition.
@Ra1234 - I am circumcised. It doesn't seem to be getting any better. I hope with time that it will heal. How long did it take for yours to heal??
I'm extremely disappointed that the doctor did not discuss the potential disastrous side effects of applying a steroid cream to your penis glans. Perhaps to him this is common knowledge, had I known I NEVER would have used it. If any of the doctors out there think that this is really no big deal you should try it yourself and then you will understand what hell there is to pay for using potent steroids on a part of the body where it should not be applied. There are many other options for treating jock itch other than Lotrisone. And if you should decide to prescribe it, communicate with the patient, I don't know everything you do, if I did I'd be a doctor.
I went tru the same as you. Stop the creams and leave it alone , the skin will repair by itself. Are you uncircumcised?
I used a total of 60 grams and had another prescription but didn't have it filled once I realized what was actually causing the redness, irritation, and skin thinning. I just can't believe this, it's depressing that I tried to be proactive about a minor infection and what the doctor prescribed left me with a much worse condition. Is there really anything a dermatologist can do to reverse this? From what I've read it can be permanent. If anyone knows of anything else that can help please respond.
Absorption of even moderately potent steroids is many folds in areas like eyelid, genital areas and on the infant skin in total. This sometimes leads to atrophy and telangectasias(visible blood vessels). To reverse it it is difficult, and takes time.Emolient cremes help but time is the factor.Do consult your doc.
