poison ivy

I have had poison ivy for almost two weeks.  Monday since it had spread to my legs from my arms, I went to a doctor.  He gave me a shot, some methylprednisol, and other pills for the itch.  I'm am waking up at night itching.  Also, I'm treating the itch with calamine lotion and other creams for itch.   How long does it usually take for the itch to stop. Thanks.

Thanks for your info.  As of Memorial Day, my itch has finally diminished.  I finished all the methylprednisol and am still taking some pills for the itch.  The lesions are dried up and life is looking better.  However, I worked in the yard again today so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I didn't run into any more poison ivy.  Believe me I'll seek medical help before the itch gets as bad as before.  Thanks again.

Hi,

Continue with the prescribed medications. You could take some oral antihistamine or antiallergic medications like loratadine or cetrizine. Apply calamine lotion at the sites of the lesions.

You should follow up with your doctor about your symptoms - no time frame can be specified.

If the lesions progress, you could go to the ER or consult your doctor - you would then need injectable antiallergic and steroid medications for your symptoms.

Drink plenty of water and consult your skin specialist if the lesions persist.

Let us know about how you are doing and if you have any other doubts.

Keep us posted.

i had a severe case of poison Ivy in late May, first I had little itchy red bumps across my inner arm, legs, breasts- these bumps gradually become huge sipping blisters while the itching intensified and my arm was swollen and very painful. Went to the dermatologist who prescribed prednisone for 15 days. This went on for over a month until it subsided. Now, I am getting itchy red little bumps in the same place I had the blisters! I am concerned that it will recur and it will start the whole ordeal again.  I do not care what doctors say, it does recur!
