Skin lesion

I have had a small skin growth/lesion that has been slowly growing on my skin for approx. 8 months now. At first it appeared as a small bump, I assumed this was a blemish or a pimple so i began to pick at it for a few weeks. the skin beneath the small crust was hard and felt like a bump. I continued to try to 'cure' the problem by picking it and then cleaning the wound. Eventually it began to grow more quickly and was slightly swollen so I consulted my physician, this was about 5 months ago and I was told that I had a skin infection, I was worried about the problem but my doctor had assured me that it was indeed an infection which she said she could easily treat with a topical steroid and antibiotic cream - fucidin. I applied it as directed and it dealt with the swelling and red lesion. i was satisfied with the result of its healing and left it alone for months only to find myself picking it again when it began to grow into a bump again. I have been ignoring this lesion under the idea that it is a recurring infection, but the fact that it has persisted for 8 months now without fully healing bothers and worries me and has left me wondering about the diagnosis my doctor gave. I am not sure what to think at this point. the bump is ulcerated again and growing. please give me any insight into this issue if you can.

Thank you,

Leesa

the bump is rather hard and located on my cheek, and now getting sorer. the skin is hardened in the area around the opening, but I had assumed it wasn't an infection because I don't feel ill. It's frustrating. Yes, the first bout of the infection seemed to clear decently but left a scar-like bump, which I thought was a scar but eventually grew into another lesion causing my current dilemma. I'm really hoping it is not a cancerous growth or anything of that sort. But this week I intend to have it examined once again by my doctor and then, finally referred to a dermatologist to find out exactly what it is.

thank you for your help.

Hi Leesa,

Try to avoid picking the lesion because this could lead to infection. Skin infections may recur due many causes. It is good that the previous infection had favorable response to the antibiotic. Are there other signs or symptoms present? It would  be best to see your doctor for further evaluation and to rule out cellulitis. It may also be helpful to have the lesion cultured to identify which specific microorganism is responsible. It is important to keep the area clean and resist the urge to manipulate the lesion.

Take care and keep us posted.
