tiny black dot on fingernail

Eight days ago I noticed a tiny black spot at the base of the nail of the middle finger, right hand.  By coincidence I had a dermatologist appointment the same day.  Doctor said to observe it and hopefully it will grow out.  Since then the spot has increased slightly.  No streaking.  Slight stiffness in finger.  Should I get a second opinion?
