Gastro Side effects of Metformin

I've been taking 500mg twice daily, with breakfast and supper for 7+ years. All of a sudden two
years ago I started having chronic diarreah. I had several tests...colonoscopy, endoscopy, SIBO,
thyroid test and more. Everything kept coming back with no signs of bacteria, colitis, crohns and
was diagnosed with IBS-D. At my annual physical my doctor had me stop the metformin for a month.
It's been 2 weeks so far and the culprit seems to be the metformin. My CVS pharmacy changed the
metformin manufacturer about two years ago (smaller pill size). I feel as though I have a new lease on
life but I'm not sure what he may suggest when I go back in two weeks. My A1C was 5.6% but glucose
was a bit high at 122. Has this happened to anyone else? If so, please describe. Thank you!

Interesting. Since you are on a generic, what about trying a different one (maybe even the one you were on before)? If that does't work, there are metformin alternatives.  Unfortunately, there are those that don't tolerate Metformin. But the effect of the drug is necessary so finding an alternative is so important. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/323128  This article goes into some alternatives. There ARE options!

Long-term therapy with metformin is known to reduce intestinal absorption of vitamin B12.  One of the many possible symptoms of low B12 is diarrhoea.
