I'm happy your able to *control* your diabetes with diet and exercise.
I am a type ll diabetic diagnosed August 2010. At my last doctor visit, he said my diabetes had been reversed., This is how it happened. First, I had an appointment with a registered dietician who explained how I got there. Then, how I was to behave going forward; every meal less than 60 carbs, lose weight and keep active. I ridgedly adhere to 60 carbs, no sweets or junk food. I have lost 55 lbs and my BMI is less than 26, almost normal. Because of arthritis in my legs, exercise is difficult but am active everyday.
I monitor once a day before breakfast and then after lunch next day. Fortunately I haven't needed meds. I am still working and now enjoy going to the office again.
Restricting meals to 60 carbs, the weight just fell off, easiest diet I was ever on and I have been on a few.
Best of luck in your struggle and keep us informed.
To add to caregiver, ask your doctor for referral to a diabetes education class or check with your local hospital. There you will learn about lifestyle changes you can easily make to control and manage your diabetes so you can lead a normal life. Millions do and so can you.
It's not the end of the line. You can live a relatively normal life if you take regular glucose readings, follow dietary recomendations, excercise moderately, and follow your physician's guidelines. The best thing is to find a local diabetic facility that will provide you with training, feedback, and weekly monitoring until things get settled down. Usually there is a physician's assistant or nurse practicioner running this kind of clinic and they are very knowledgeable and supportive.
