A fasting morning glucose level gives you a better 'picture' of your glucose , and that should be under 100. The a1c test give you the big picture. I just noticed yesterday that walmart has a a1c test kit.

i test my sugars at home . my dr gave me a meter because am prediabetic and wants me to test at home.
so the more carbs you eat/sugar the higher it will read. so how can they say that 2 hours after you eat your sugar should rean no more than 140, i know the ideal is 120 but mine is never 120 after two hours. tonight its 152 after two hours after dinner , yes i had a roll and mac/cheese/ few baked french fries and than sugar free choc pudding. so i guess thats normal for that meal. if i had ate very little carbs it would be lower. dont know how they can say after two hours your sugar should be 120-140, even my hubby whos not a pre diabetic fasting is great for him, but his sugar is high after a meal to. so is it the morning fasting that matters most?

So do you test fasting glucose in the morning occationaly with a home meter? Is this as accurate for a fasting glucose test as going to the dr 's lab?
I think I need to get one of these home testers.
To get it down without meds I can strongly recommend adopting a very low carb diet. I am currently eating about 50 - 70 g of carbs per day and have been able to normalise blood sugars.
My worst fasting was 176 over christmas, and my highest after eating (too much carbs, of course) has been around 200.
My numbers on this low carb diet are 70 - 95 fasting, and usually < 100 after eating.
I spread the carbs over the day and try not to eat more than about 15 - 20 g of carbs per meal (except at breakfast, where I try to eat < 10 g of carbs as I am more sugar sensitive in the early morning).
been running ok but to day was very stressful and its been 146-177 today a little scarey. was 110 when i got up after fasting all night but rest day was crazy. not on meds. trying to get it down so dont have to go on meds .
Yes, stress and anxiety can make your sugars go up. Being sick can also have the same effect.
If your sugars are very high you need to make lifestyle changes and take medications, if necessary to bring them back to normal levels.
normal blood sugars 2 hours after eating if your sugars are really truely normal should be < 100 (range 80 - 100), which is even lower than < 120. This is important to know.
THe meal you report eating was extremely high in carbs. A Roll, Mac and cheese, fries and choc pudding. Essentially a huge amount of fat and carbohydrates. Many people would probably have high sugars on such a meal.
You should be managing what you eat to keep your 2 hour post eating lower. You will have complications if your sugars are consistently higher than 140.
Ideal diet will include plenty of veges, protein, and less carbs - and those carbs you eat should be complex - whole grain.
