Denice

my son had an x-ray at 9 months which showed hiatal hernia. However the pcp failed to note this.  My son was terribly ill for the next 11 months c fever, retching, GI bleeding, cough wheezing and pale-yellow color he eventually needed transfusion.  I finally went to pulmonologist had x-ray and A huge hernia was noted. We were told laparscopy could not be done (verbally) and a traditional cut was done.  Post surgery x-ray showed a portion of the nissen was above the diaphram and just 5 months later x-ray showed that the stomach was above the diaphram.  All x-rays since (my son has scoliosis show paraesophageal or hiatal hernia.  My question is:  Does this mean surgery failed?  is hernia back (now they are referring to this as a paraesophageal hernia)  The doctors never told us herina might be back so I am wondering when I see x-ray report and it shos Pre-demonstartion of hernia, does that mean there is a new issue or they are seeing repaired hernia?
is it typical that Nissen wrap would slip so soon after surgery?

Thank you

I told you POST surgery and I mean day of surgery the x-ray showed the nissen wrap above diaphrqam.  Maybe I should have asked "should Nissen be seen above diapphram"  and are you even familiar with hernia surgery.  Thanks

I cannot comment on this without viewing the X-ray studies.

If the stomach is above the diaphragm, it is possible that the hernia has returned. Imaging studies like a CT scan can be considered for further evaluation.

This question should be discussed with your son's surgeon.

If the diagnosis remains in question, another opinion can be sought at an academic medical center.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
