can laprascopic gas cause inguinal hernia?

I had prior scans  2006 showing inguinal hernia. I also had sigmoidectomy surgery in 2007. Next thing up is the gallbladder surgery in Nov 2011. Should the surgeon have used Laprascopic procedure versus Open surgery? Gallbladder removal went ok, I think, but I woke up the next day and after walking a little discovered huge swelling to left groin area. Bottom line I went into get gallbladder removed now I need OPEN Hernia surgery to repair inguinal hernia. (My internist agrees the gas probably pushed the hernia out. Painful bulge, burns sometimes, but seems to go back in when I sleep and pops out next day.) Can gas cause this and if my surgeon read prior scans (he didnt) what could have been done differently.  I am sure I am not the first patient to have suffered from gas-induced hernia.

Hello and hope you are doing well.

Hernia is the protrusion of abdominal contents through an abnormal opening. So, any state of increased pressure like coughing, fluid in abdomen or gas can cause the hernia to be pushed out. So, the gas may have pushed the bowels through the opening, but is unlikely to cause a hernia. Since it is still reducible, it is unlikely to be complicated. Hernia needs to be repaired to prevent complications like strangulation. For this, a General Surgeon will be able to help you.

Hope this helped and do keep us posted.
