Colposcopy

I'm scheduled for a colposcopy and wandered if during the procedure the doctor will be
able to give me more information. I know biopsy will be taken if areas look suspicious.
I had a misscarriage and D&C this year and wandered if that may contribute to the abnormal pap.
After the birth of my daughter 14 years ago, I had 3 years of abnormal paps (had colposcopy's)
and thing returned to normal on its own. Thank you for your input.

Hello,

Abnormal pap smears are related to changes of the cervical cells due to the human papilloma virus.  There are many different strains of this virus, some cause genital warts while others can cause cervical dysplasia (abnormal cells) or cervical cancer.  Colposcopy allows the physician to visualize more closely the cervix (and upper vagina) to look for areas that may show signs of abnormal cellular change.  Those areas can then be biopsied to make a tissue diagnosis (by the pathologist).  Your D&C would have had no impact on your pap smear results.

A woman's body (her immune system) can clear itself of HPV, although the likelihood of this depends on the severity of abnormal changes found.

Best regards,

Dr. Downing

I had a colposcopy in april of 2006 and was diagnosed with cis.  During the colposcopy they showed the whole thing on a monitor so I got to see the area affected.  The part that was taken out during the biopsy had to bee sent to pathology to be tested, but my gyn told me what he thought it was due to appearance, and he was right.  I had a hesterectomy in May removing my cervix and uterus.  Good luck, I do know that with some abnormal paps like dysplasia they can do a leep instead of hysterecomy.  My thoughts are with you
