HPV and the Leep Procedure

I just had the leep procedure done today to remove stage 2 pre cancer cells. My doctor said about hpv going away once my body builds up an immunity towards it. He said even though i only have sex with one person (my husband) that the same hpv virus can be transferred back and fourth to each other and my body wont build an immunity towards it and i can get pre cancer cells again so he recommends me not to have sex for 8 months to guarantee that the hpv built up an immunity. but ive read that if i only have sex with one person, we cant spread the same hpv virus back and fourth to each other and that our bodies will still build up an immunity towards it without re infecting each other constantly. My question is which one is true? Will i get pre cancer cells again because my husband and i can keep reinfecting each other or will we not re infect each other and still build up an immunity towards it? What are the chances of me getting the pre cancer cells again?

Hello,

No one truly knows the correct answer to this questions.  It is not clear the repeat exposure to the same viral strand from the same partner puts a woman at an increased risk for "re-infection".  Therefore, we don't recommend a monogamous couple refrain from intercourse.  Your husband should make sure he has no warts involving his genitalia, and you should continue to have regular cervical screening.

Best regards,

Dr. Downing

Another issue that need to be aware of is if you get exposed to another HPV if you or your husband have sexual relations with anyone else.  That could be what your gyn is talking about. There are over 30 genital HPV's.

As for the LEEP, most women have that and will never get another relapse however you still need to get regular paps and check ups.  LEEP often does a great job of removing any cancer cells.

I can't believe that Dr. Downing answered this question like this.  I am appalled actually.  He obviously does not understand anything about HPV which is quite typical of gynocologists.

You can't ping-pong the virus back and forth between your husband and yourself.  Once you have it, you have it.  You don't get it "again".  It's like herpes.  Once you have it, you have it.  You don't get "re-infected" with the virus because you already have it.

I recommend that you read Dr. Hunter Handsfield  on the STD forum in regards to HPV.  He is an expert in all STD's.

Good luck to you.
