Plastic Wrap at Massage Parlor

Dr.

For the first and only time I visited an oriental masage parlor. After the massage the attendant asked me if I had a condom and I did not and neither did she. She told me to wait and she went and got some plastic wrap. She wrapped it around my thing and we had intercourse for about 4 to 5 minutes but I couldn't deal with not knowking if the plastic wrap would protect me so I pulled out and she finished the job with her hand. I know plastic wrap is not a substitue for a condom but did I put myself at a significant risk for HIV. It has been two weeks and I have not had any symptoms for any other STD. I guess I just want to know if this was a major risk and would I need to be tested for HIV, I definitely don't plan on ever doing it again.

Thank You for your help

Dr. Hunter,

Thank you for your help. This does settle my fears, especially coming from a man that specializes in this area, again thank you.

Welcome to the HIV forum.

It was a smart move to use plastic wrap, if a condom wasn't available.  Any barrier is better than none.   As you can imagine, there are no data on the efficacy of plastic wrap as a substitute condom, but most likely it works.  If your penis remained covered and it didn't break, you can assume protection was complete.  Also, it is statistically unlikely the massage worker had HIV; and even if she did, without a condom the average HIV transmission risk for unprotected vaginal sex, female to male, averages only around 1 chance in 2,000.

In other words, there was no significant risk of HIV and you don't need to be tested.  But if this analysis doesn't settle your fears, get tested after a few weeks for reassurance.  If you haven't otherwise been at risk, for sure it will be negative.
