HIV Risk and Exposure

Hi,

I am about to ask you a question you have been asked a million times.  However, since my HIV results are now delayed until Friday, was supposed to be today, I now need re assurance so I am now stressing even more.  My test is an 8 panel STD test with HIV early detection (checking DNA/RNA).

My question is would you recommend testing along with the odds of being infected given the situation below?

I have read multiple posts on this forum and feel pretty good but wanted to ask anyway:

I had sex with a female internet escort in a city where the HIV rate is 12.1 per 100,000 (as of 2008).  Her price was 120 dollars.  I did not see any needle marks however I did not ask if she was an IV drug user.  Before we begun she asked if I had a condom as she had run out. I did not, I asked if she was clean she said very clean and proceeded to have less than 2 minutes of vaginal sex.  She asked me to pull out before I came and I did.  After the fact I asked her again if she was clean she said yes very and also stated she wouldn't do this if she wasn't.  She also wanted my repeated business which might play into the physiological odds of her lying.

I am circumcised have no STD's other than HPV  (no symptoms ever, or warts, not tested just assuming since my GF of 5 years had HPV and cancer because of it).  Also this has been 3 weeks ago and I have zero symptoms of any STD's or anything resembling ARS.

I know it is 1 out of 1,000 for vaginal sex act but I am freaking out that she lied and I have HIV.

With all the above Doc, would you be freaking out as I am?

Thanks in advance,
John

Hello John,
Thank you very much for your post and welcome to our forum.
Because there was unprotected penetration, there was obviosuly a risk of contracting an STD, including HIV.  One cannot rely on symptoms.  And I am pleased to hear that you have had the tests.  However your estimated risk of HIV infection is relatively low:  unknow status of the lady, low incidence part of the world, and you are circumcised.  As you mention, the risk to you would be less than 1 in 1,000, assuming that she was positive.  Statistically it is more likely that she is not, even as a sex worker.  Therefore even though you do need a test, I am pretty confident that the result will be negative.
Best wishes,
Dr José
