Quick Question Concerning Receiving Oral Sex

Before I ask, this is my first time on here and I have read many responses and I thank all of the doctors who have taken the time to answer others and my problems.

My question is this, I am a male and I receieved unprotected oral sex from a male.   I have genital herpes and I was curious if my chances of getting hiv went up.  I have read that if you are getting oral sex, you have nothing to worry about for hiv.   The session lasted maybe 3 minutes tops.

Secondly,  if I need a test, how soon should I get the test to make sure its the most accurate.

So does herpes increase this even without a break out?

Dr.

I have a brief question, I am wondering if it is just coincidence.  I live in the Northeast and had a sales meeting last week in  Las Vegas(3 hour time difference).  I ended up getting the flu the day after I came home from the sales meeting.  Now there were a lot of people there who were sick and I knew of a few who stated they were(even one that recently coming off of the flu).  I ended up going to the doctors, they did a rapid flu test and tested positive for the flu, do you think this would have any correlation with HIV or just bad timing and my surroundings?

As a sidenote, I tested for gonnorhea and chalmydia and both tests came back negative.

Regards,
C

it is not a proven fact that oral sex cannot transmit HIV...so no body can say it surely that it is NO RISK...from data it is found that there are no confirmed cases that somebody get HIV from receiving oral sex..that does not mean that it cannot happen..so go for test and be  sure abouth your result.....if it is a proven fact then evry doctors will say it surely that NO RISK..but all the doctors are saying that LOW to ZERO risk.........it does not mean ZERO risk.

Hi Chris,

Anxiety and distress can and will most certainly cause some symptoms which people interpret as being HIV related.

My very firm view is that you will not acquire HIV from being sucked.

very best, Sean

Dr.

I did forget to ask, if I have anxiety towards the situation, can the anxiety cause symptoms similar to hiv?

Hi Chris

If you can't find those tests then a thrid generation HIV 1 and 2 antibody test will give you greater than 99% accuracy at 6 weeks and will be certain at 12 weeks.

You'll have to ask the CDC that question I'm afraid and report back. I have never seen a patient with that scenario; heard of it; read about it in a peer reviewed journal or heard about it from colleagues. We see very many newly infected HIV positives in my clinic here in London and I can safely say that I firmly believe that you will not acquire HIV from being sucked.

best wishes, Sean

I forgot to ask this, but why does the CDC still say there is a low risk of oral sex on both ends for catching HIV?

Thank you again,
Chris

Dr. Cummings,

Thank you for the advice.   The tests that I have been looking up in my area don't seem to feature those test names.  The tests you speak of, would they also be called the rapid test and can be done in 30 minutes(at the community health center)?

Since I can't seem to find those tests in my centers, would a regular test be the best after 3 months?

Thank you again,

Good Morning Chris,

I don't think you should fret about HIV here. You will not acquire HIV through being sucked. HIV does not spread via saliva = spit. The likelihood in any event is that the other man was HIV negative.

Genital herpes to my knowledge has only been studied in penetration genital sex - not through oral sex.

I do not think there would be an increase in the risk to you - and I don't think there would be a risk if you did not have an outbreak.

If you did want to test then you can use either a combined HIV 1 and 2 antibody test together with a p24 core antigen test - this is referred to as a fourth generation or HIV DUO or HIV COMBO test. You can do this from 28 days onwards after the event. Alternatively you can use an HIV PCR test which can be done from 7 days after exposure. This test though usually takes several days at least to be processed.

best wishes, Sean
