Unprotected Vaginal Sex

Hi Doc - recently I had unprotected vaginal sex with a girl I met at a bar. Not sure about her past but I assume she isn't an angel so to speak. The sex lasted around 20 minutes. My question is how at risk am I for HIV infection? From reading thru the forum it appears on the low end statistically speaking but I wanted to provide my personal details so you can let me know. Thanks.

Hello,
Thank you for your post.
The estimated risk in this case is relatively low for you.  Assuming that she was HIV positive (which is unlikely statistically speaking, female from the US), the risk for you would be less than 0.1% (less than 1 in 1,000). Not knowing her status would reduce the risk dramatically.  However I would still recommedn that you get tested as it was unprotected sexual intercourse and the risk is not zero.
Best wishes,
Dr José
