Very scared about hiv

I recently visited Thailand and while i was there i drank to much one night and had unprotected sex with a sex worker Nov 28. A few days later it started to hurt when i went pee and there was discharge so i went to the doctor there and he gave me a shot of ceftriaxone sodium forgram and 100mg twice a day of doxcycline hydrochioride. I am home now in Toronto, Canada and have been getting headaches and feeling very tired all the time starting Dec 5th and on Dec 8th i got a rash (slightly itchy) all over my chest and back and a little on my arms. The rash is pinkish and raised a little and i am very scared this could be hiv rash. I went to the hosiptal yesterday and got check out for std's and hiv but the test won't be ready for a few days and im really scared i have hiv now.

Well researching the rash it sounds more than anything like syphillis than hiv, I mean your stressing yourself out and that is causing loss of sleep, headaches, and even rashes.

Hello

I'm sorry this post has not been answered until now - but the reason for this is that the "noise" you have generated by extra postings pushes this down the list we can see - so it looks to us as though its been answered. Since we do so many of these and since many of the events questions are the same quite frankly, if you do that, your question will run the risk of being missed.

But - returning to your original question:-

I recently visited Thailand and while i was there i drank to much one night and had unprotected sex with a sex worker Nov 28. IF YOU HAD THIS EVENT ON THE NOV 28TH THEN THE HIV TEST WONT BE ACCURATE UNLESS IT IS AN HIV RNA PCR TEST WHICH WILL BE RELIABLE FROM AROUND 7 DAYS ONWARDS. AN HIV ANTIBODY TEST IS USELESS IN RESPECT OF THE EVENT YOU DESCRIBE UNTIL BETWEEN 4 AND 6 WEEKS POST EVENT.

THE OVERALL "AVERAGE" RISK FOR HIV CONTAMINATION FROM THIS EVENT IS APPROXIMATELY 1 IN 1000 OR SO. BUT THIS REPRESENTS AND AVERAGE AND OTHER VARIABLES, INCLUDING THE ACQUISITION OF ANOTHER STD DO INCREASE THE CHANCES OF NEW HIV INFECTION PROVIDED OF COURSE THAT THE OTHER PERSON WAS HIV POSITIVE ANYWAY.

YOU WILL NEED EITHER AN HIV RNA PCR TEST AT 7 OR MORE DAYS OR AN HIV 4TH GENERATION TEST AT 28 OR MORE DAYS OR AN HIV ANTIBODY 3RD GENERATION AT 42 OR MORE DAYS TO GIVE A GREATER THAN 99% CHANCE OF ACCURACY.

BEST REGARDS, SEAN

I am still waiting for the hospital test results but the nurse i talked to today said it would be to earily to test for hiv and to wait at least one month. I am a mess right now

just a heads up one of the side affects of doxycycline is rashing.  It can happen anywhere on your body and I am sure thats what you are seeing.  The symptoms you are describing are not things that mean "I have HIV"  being tired etc......... so chill out this is all guilt you are experiencing.  The antibiotics you received took care of the gon.  If you want get tested again and believe the tests for Gon.  They are incredibly sensistive so if they say you are clear believe it.  You do not have HIV believe that too once you get your results.  You had fun you made a mistake we all make them learn from it and keep your head on even when you are drinking especially in a foreign country.  One of the posters commented about sex workers ........they are correct and even more so in Thailand where the government moved to end the surge of HIV that was present years ago.  Sex workers get checked regularly and most of them are free from STDs and HIV.  Best of luck and chill out.

I wouldn't worry about you'll be fine but please post the results when you have them. And Eatly don't put words in my mouth I never said the choice was unwise, I said learn from your mistake. Everyone does stupid things during some point in there life but if you never take a risk than you would have never have known what good could have come from it.

Since no one is helping you let me try to help you ease your mind and move on, the risk you described is low but not zero, they say that the risk is around 1-8% of a risk. In addition, most sex workers are clean and don't have any std's or hiv according to the forum. So in all you have a better chance of getting in a car accident in your lifetime than catching hiv from a sex worker. In addition, your already on medication and that would have cured most forms of stds. Also I think its too early for symptoms to show up from hiv and your more than likely feeling guilty and putting these ideas in your head which can cause headaches and lost of sleep. Try to calm down, even if you catch hiv now with medication you can live a long healthy life but I DOUBT you got hiv maybe a std, but like I said you have a 1-8% chance. In everything learn from your mistake and don't do it again, if you have faith trust god and everything will be ok. I hope this helped. Can you post the results when you have them? I think they'll come back negative but this will help other people realize the risk is low. Thank you
