Worry about affecting to my family..

Dear Dr
First of all thank you for listening to my concerns again.

Dr Jose has basicially advised me not be worry previously, but since my wife and baby have both been sick I start freaking out again.

I had unprotected oral sex and protected virginal sex with CSW early Oct last year.

My test result Ag/Ab Hiv 1/2 in week 4, 6, 8, 10.5 are all negative (done in australia).

I do have unprotect sex with my wife.

My wife has high fever, swollen node, cough, sore throat in mid December (which already made me very nervious).

My wife is still breastfeeding my baby, my baby has fever and rash last week for 2 days only. The rash is like buring skin all over the body, red, but not much the arm and leg. Doctor didn't know what exactly it was but said it might be virus inflection and not a big deal.

So far I don't have any fever or rash or sore throat. Here is my questions:

1. Can the test pick up the antigen/antibody even I don't have any symptoms/seroc?

2. How long usually does the fever/rash last? Are other symptoms accompany the fever/rash? (my baby only have the fever/rash and she seems quite happy)

3. Is it true that baby does pick up virus easily so rash/fever are not a big deal?

3. Should I still be worried and have another test done? (seeing my wife and baby have both had fever) I'm thinking to take one more test this week which will be 16 weeks for conclusive result.

I hope to hear from you as I'm extremely worried at the moment.

Thank you Dr Mervyn Tyrer, I really appreciate your advice. Yes you are right that people do get sick from time to time. I'll move on and have learnt my lesson.

Hello, Sean, lucky boy, is currently on vacation in Fort Lauderdale USA and shortly to go on the Allure of the Sea's cruise ship so I'm stepping in on his behalf. I hope thats all ok with you my friend. I haven't had a chance to look at Dr Jose's comments but I can see that you've got yourself v v v distressed about this. It all sounds very innocent so I really wouldn't worry. The first take home message for you is that people do get ill and not all illness is HIV. The next one is that you had protected vaginal sex and you have had negative HIV tests at some excellent intervals. The result....my friend is that you cannot possibly have HIV.

Your questions
1. Can the test pick up the antigen/antibody even I don't have any symptoms/seroc?

Of course - thats what the test is all about. You are HIV negative.

2. How long usually does the fever/rash last? Are other symptoms accompany the fever/rash? (my baby only have the fever/rash and she seems quite happy)

Completely irrelevant. Your baby/wife have something entirely unrelated to your sexual indiscretion. You had proteted sex = you WILL NOT GET HIV and you had negative HIV tests - YOU WILL NOT HAVE HIV.

3. Is it true that baby does pick up virus easily so rash/fever are not a big deal?

Again, irrelevant - you are focussing on fear not reality. Reality is that you were never exposed and the tests have proved that.

3. Should I still be worried and have another test done? (seeing my wife and baby have both had fever) I'm thinking to take one more test this week which will be 16 weeks for conclusive result.

No...and you know what..your wife and baby - and hopefully more babies to come are going to get fevers from time to time - thats life my firend. People get ill and babies especially get rashes - it is NOT HIV.

now keep calm, put all this in perspective and relax about it all. Merv.

I also had a Anti nuclear AB test and result is ANA positive speckled pattern (titre 1:40), lab comment is 'this anti nuclear antibody titre (1:40 - 1:80) has a low diagnostic specificity and is present in many healthy individuals', does it affect the Hiv test result?

Is the Ag/Ab Hiv 1/2 test that is used in Australia same as what you call the DUO test? Is it a 4th generation test?
