No penetration risk???

Dear Dr.

I am worried that I may have hiv.  I was with a guy a few weeks ago and he was rubbing his penis along my vagina no penetration happened.  He was fingering me and masterbating. I suppose precum have gotten on his fingers and into my vagina. I may have had a small cut from cutting myself from shaving and a small sore or cut was felt near my anus after. Not sure if that was there at the time of the incident. Does that increase my risk?  I do not know this persons hiv status. Was this risky? Should I get tested? We never had sex. Please help freaking out. Thank you.

Thanks for the additional info.  Assuming it is correct, it is exceedingly unlikely that your partner has HIV.  The chance you caught it from him is probably is lower than the likelihood you'll be struck by lightning.

He is not a drug user. Maybe has had numerous partners. Never imprisoned and born and lives in North America.  I am not a drug user and am married. We are currently separated but this was my only encounter. I hope this background helps and I truly appreciate your advice this is such a great forum. Thank you.

Welcome to the forum.  Thanks for your confidence in our services.

HIV is rarely if ever transmitted without penile penetration into the vaginal or rectum.  Even with unprotected vaginal sex to completion, if the male has HIV, the rate of transmission to female partners is around once for every 1,000 events.  This is why many regular partners of HIV infected people never are infected themselves.  (Maybe you didn't know that.)

The other factor hear, which you don't mention, is whether your partner is at risk.  What do you know about his sexual lifestyle?  If he isn't bisexual, an injection drug user, formerly imprisoned, or an immigrant from and HIV endemic area (like southern Africa), then the chance he has HIV is extremely low.

In summary, this was a very low risk event for HIV -- and for other STDs as well.  I see no need for testing, unless my words don't completely settle your fears and you would like to have the additional evidence of negative test results.

I hope this has helped.  I may have a bit more advice if you'd like to tell me about your partner, as well as your own sexual/drug lifestyle.

Best wishes--  HHH, MD
